Looking for a cooking oil that’s healthy, has a rich buttery taste, nutty
flavour and aroma as well as a host of medicinal benefits?
Ghee is what you’ve been searching for!
What is Ghee?
Ghee is clarified butter, without the lactose, casein (dairy proteins) and milk solids, so making it ideal if you have allergies to any dairy intolerances. Traditionally the butter is prepared by gently heating it in a pot, the lactose & the milk solids coagulate and are carefully removed leaving you with this pure golden oil. This process also evaporates most of its natural water content, making ghee light, easy to use and resistant to spoilage requiring no refrigeration if prepared correctly.
What are the Benefits of Ghee?
Ayurveda considers Ghee to be the best and ideal cooking oil to use with numerous mind, and body benefits. Ghee is high in beneficial compounds such as conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) and a fatty acid known as butyrate acid.
Butyrate is a short-chain essential fatty acid which is only found in butter and ghee. It is known to protect against cancer and has a positive effect on type 2 diabetes, cholesterol and obesity.
Ghee imparts the benefits of these essential fatty acids without the problems of oxidised cholesterol, trans fatty acids or hydrogenated fats like other nasty oils on the market like canola, corn, peanut and soybean oil. Ghee also contains several fat-soluble vitamins including vitamin A, E and K.
Because of its high smoking point, Ghee can be used for baking, sautéing and even roasting.
