Spring Awakening: Breathe Easy This Season

Spring Awakening: Breathe Easy This Season

Your Path to Vibrant Energy

Spring is a season of new life, fresh beginnings, and renewal — the perfect time for a little spring cleaning, inside and out.

But for many, this beautiful season also brings some less welcome guests: hay fever, allergies, sneezing, sinus congestion, and that frustrating brain fog that makes it hard to feel your best.

Does this sound like you?

From an Ayurvedic perspective, spring is the season of Kapha — a time when the body naturally accumulates heaviness, dampness, and congestion. When Kapha is out of balance, it can manifest as mucus buildup, sluggish digestion, fatigue, and yes, those annoying spring allergies. Spring is the perfect time to restore your body back to balance and clear away the heaviness of winter.

Here are my Easy Steps to get started for a Gentle Spring Cleanse

Firstly, as a general rule, it’s not advisable to make sudden, drastic changes to your eating habits. Instead, take a gentle, gradual approach. Begin by removing processed foods one at a time, and replace them with nourishing whole foods that support natural detoxification and healing.

1. Morning Detox Ritual – Warm Lemon & Honey Water

Start each morning with a cup of warm water mixed with fresh lemon or lime juice and a teaspoon of raw honey.

Why it works:

  • Detoxifies the system by flushing out metabolic waste
  • Reduces congestion and supports clear breathing
  • Soothes inflammation
  • Improves circulation and supports lymphatic flow
  • Alkalizes the body, helping you feel refreshed and energized

Tip: Drink this on an empty stomach before breakfast for the best results.

2. Lighten Your Diet

Swap out heavy, rich foods like bacon, eggs, avocado, meat, salt water fish and bread for lighter meals with bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes, while limiting the sweet, salty and sour tastes.

Having fruit in the morning eg, red apples, pears, or juice like celery. Another favourite of mine is Carrot, Beetroot, ginger and Celery.

  • Try warm veggie soups, Dahl, steamed greens, and herbal teas like Chicory.
  • Eat the biggest meal of the day at lunch, if possible, when the digestive fire is at its peak rather than having a heavy breakfast and or dinner.
  • Avoid taking in fats up till midday for the liver to continue to detox.

Spice It Up

Incorporate warming spices into your food like ginger, cumin, coriander, fennel, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper to stimulate digestion, improve nutrient absorption and reduce congestion building a stronger immunity.

3. Rethink Cold Dairy & Sugar

We all love enjoying a scoop of ice cream on a sunny spring day!

But during this season, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, and cold milk can actually increase congestion in the body.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, these foods have a cold, heavy quality, which creates blockages and sluggishness, especially in the respiratory and digestive systems.

Why it matters:

When these foods are eaten — particularly at night — their effects often show up the next morning as:

  • Stuffy nose or sinus congestion
  • Mucus buildup in the throat or chest
  • Brain fog or heaviness in the head
  • Feeling tired or sluggish upon waking

What to do instead:

  • Reduce your intake of cold dairy and refined sugar while your body is experiencing these symptoms.
  • If you can’t resist an occasional treat, enjoy it during the day, when your digestion is strongest.
  • Opt for warm, light, and seasonal foods to balance the Kapha energy of spring.

4. Move Your Body Daily

Choose energizing practices like brisk walks, swimming, yoga flows, or dancing to shake off Kapha’s sluggishness and boost circulation.

5. Breathe & Clear ️

Practice Pranayama (breathing exercises) like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to clear sinuses and energize your mind.

By making these mindful choices, you’ll support your body’s natural cleansing process, helping you breathe easier, feel lighter, and wake up refreshed and ready to embrace the season of renewal.
